The main upper lamp has two bulb sockets, plus a 3rd bulb socket for the reading lamp arm. If you use a power saving fluorescent bulb, you can use two 40 watt fluorescent bulb for the main light, which gives the equivalent of 300 watts (150w x 2) of standard incandescent or halogen light output for only a quarter of the energy costs (40w x 2). There is no other torchiere style lamp that will allow this level of brightness and long term cost savings. 52 of 58 people found the following review helpful Disappointed that CFL bulbs don't fit, By Usurped Dreamer "Olallie" (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Adesso Piedmont Combo Torchiere, Black (Tools & Home Improvement) My trusty $20 torchiere from Target that I have used for years recently broke, and I wanted to replace it with a similar floor lamp. I was specifically looking for one with a flexible gooseneck reading lamp like my old one, but there were very few of those available at an affordable price. I saw this Adesso model here on Amazon, read the reviews, and thought it was perfect. It was really simple to assemble; all you have to do is twist the poles and the shades into place with no additional tools. The shades are made of white translucent plastic, which is fine by me, but at this price range I would have expected something nicer, like glass. When I finished setting up the lamp, I was very disappointed by the gooseneck lamp. It's not as long as I thought it would be, and although it's flexible, it doesn't hold its position very well. It kind of droops down from whatever position you configure it in. I was most disappointed by the type of bulbs the lamp accepts... The shades look like glass or something better than the cheap plastic it really is. It's not that ugly and still is the closest thing to what I wanted; my apt is black & white modern theme, and I had wanted a torchiere with an adjustable side reading lamp, all of which this offers. My complaint about the quality is that I don't think it should cost $50+. It looks like a $20 lamp from target (mind you I couldn't find what I wanted there).About CFLs - as a previous reviewer said, they do stick out hideously. The main shade you can bend the socket degree a bit and make them fit, but nothing you can do with the reading lamp. I use them anyways. If this really bothers you, you can go for cold cathode CFLs, which look like a standard bulb, but they aren't as bright and you need shop around specialty lighting places as they are not readily available yet, try specialty lighting stores. Another thing about CFLs, if the color bugs... Read more |
