Unfortunately, I could never get it configured to hold everything that I needed so consequently I do not use it as a first aid kit. Instead, I use it for what I call a "Core Component" of a modular system that I have created. The core component holds all the survival items that I would need in an emergency and will function as a stand alone kit. If all I was able to grab was my Maxpedition FR-1 Pouch in an emergency situation I would be good to go.The main compartment is 7" x 5" x 3" with full zipper opening. It comes with a sturdy carry handle and is equipped with D-rings for shoulder strap (optional accessory) that I strongly recommend. It has modular webbing on the front, sides and back for attaching items using 5" TacTie which is another optional accessory. The FR-1 is tough and durable as all Maxpedition products.
