It is intended for the user to sit backwards, with what looks like the backrest in front of you. It's acually a support to lean on and use to help you get back off the chair.My grandfather sat in the chair not knowing this and no one was around and he couldn't get off because there was no way for him to reach around and get the handle. He ended up falling :( and was about to throw it in the dumpster. But then he realized you had to sit on it backwards and he says it's great now. The unit itself is very lightweight and easy to open and close. I cannot use it as a cane (walking device) and a seat because the unit is too short when folded so I have to carry a cane and the seat when it's needed. Wish they made the folded length adjustable so it could be used for both! And... FYI.... it is somewhat unstable and easily tips over... would probably not work well for the elderly.
